Madison BOE to Vote on Island Avenue Closure

At the regular Board of Education (BOE) meeting today, Tuesday Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m., the board will take a vote to close Island Avenue Elementary School.

The vote is listed as Action Item 11 on the agenda and states:

“The Board of Education votes to close Island Avenue Elementary School. We will charge our superintendent to finalize the re-configuration and re-districting plan with a target date of Fall 2019.”

The vote follows the recent referendum defeat of the plan to rebuild Ryerson Elementary School. However, the closure of Island Avenue has long been a part of the board’s plan for the district moving forward as enrollment continues to decline.

Superintendent of Schools Tom Scarice previously said everything he said before the referendum still stands: The district will contract from six schools to five schools and Island Avenue Elementary is the building slated for closure. Scarice said Island could close as soon as June 2019. Island is still the chosen school due to location—it is the only school that stands alone, which allows the district to focus on two campuses for security, transportation, and operating efficiencies.
