Democrat Jack Ahern is seeking his second consecutive term with Branford’s Board of Selectmen (BOS). The incumbent third selectman (2015-’17) is the endorsed running mate of Democratic first selectman candidate Lynda Mollow. Election of the three-member 2017-’19 Branford BOS will be part of the Tuesday, Nov. 7 municipal elections.

A Branford native, Ahern and his wife, Lisa, raised their five children in Branford. Ahern served the town of Branford as a firefighter for more than 30 years, including 12 years as fire chief (he retired in December 2014).

He was promoted to chief in 2002 and renewed an effort that led to bringing in Branford’s new fire headquarters in 2012. During his tenure as chief, Ahern also helped foster the growth of the town’s revenue-generating ambulance service. Serving with the Fire Department, Ahern developed his skills in public service, public safety knowledge, and extensive administrative expertise. He presented 12 annual fire departmental budgets to the town.

In The Sound’s online Election Guide 2017, Ahern discussed his top three priorities for the coming term.

“Initially, we need to take a breath and be sure we are in a position to keep our town services going against the issues with the state budget. We then need to look at all projects and be sure every penny is being spent wisely. Lastly we need to look at ways to cut spending and hold out mill rate in check.”

In response to the question, “What else do voters need to know about you?” Ahern noted, “I am devoted to my family and want the best for them. My goal is to keep Branford the best town in Connecticut to raise a family, get a top-notch education, and be able to live safely and comfortably. I am open to discussion and very much enjoy hearing from people, getting their view point and determining the best solution.”
