10/13/2017 12:00 AMRumors of a threat against Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) quickly spread across social media and put parents on high alert. As of early Friday morning, school officials and the Police Department say there is no credible threat at this time.
Superintendent of Schools Tom Scarice said there was a rumor that there had been a post insinuating some sort of attack or threat on the building, but officials have very few details at this moment because no one can produce the post.
“Every student we have talked to has said, ‘Oh well I don’t have it’ or ‘A friend of mine told me they saw it,’” he said.
A few extra police officers were put on duty this morning for extra support.
“We are under control,” he said. “We have a tremendous relationship with the police. We have had no threats at all and the police reached out to us and said, ‘Would you like some extra support today just in case?’ and we said, ‘Absolutely.’”
Madison Police Chief Jack Drumm confirmed that he put a few extra officers out at the school this morning.
“We let [the school] know that we put some extra people on because some of the parents had some concerns,” he said. “We can’t find a source of any credible threat, but I put a few extra guys on just to err on the side of caution and put people at ease.”
At 10 a.m. Scarice and DHHS Principal Anthony Salutari sent out a notification to parents, informing them that situation is under control and appropriate measures are being taken.
"...We will certainly investigate any issue and/or concern brought to our attention. We expect this situation to cause a minimal disruption today and have put supports in place for all members of the school community. If you have any questions, concerns, or information, please contact the school. We will be sharing this message with the student body to ensure they are aware of this situation."
