Valley Regional High School was one of 212 schools from 31 states and four countries that competed on Sept. 16 and 17 at Yale University. This international tournament offers every form of oratory and draws more than a thousand students to New Haven each year. Valley entered the Parliamentary division and competed through five rounds on Saturday. Students earn speech and debate points for each round. Topics are announced before each round, and teams of two have 15 minutes to prepare their arguments either as Government (speaking on behalf of the topic), or as Opposition (speaking against the topic). Some of this year’s debates dealt with the United Nations, Russian relations, European Union, North Korea, immigration, free and fair trade, and campaign spending.

The Yale Debate Association, an undergraduate debating society at Yale University, hosts the Yale Invitational. One of the oldest college groups of its kind in the United States, past members range from President and Chief Justice William Taft to past U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
