West End Revitalization of Main Street Set to Begin

Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr., gathered with local business owners and elected officials to break ground on the third phase of the town’s Downtown Revitalization program on Oct. 4.

The $1.1 million project seeks to revitalize the west-end area of Main Street, from Elm Street to Pardee Place, and includes new sidewalks, streetscapes, decorative lighting, and safety improvements, such as blue box safety lights to call emergency personnel.

Phase 3b will expand those improvements from Pardee Place to Columbus Avenue, with Phase 3c extending the project from Columbus Avenue past McDermott Chevrolet to the New Haven line.

Officials noted that the $1.1 million project is financed by a federal grant of $500,000 and a State of Connecticut Local Capital Improvement grant of $600,000, which includes $100,000 in matching funds from the town that was approved to be bonded.

The contractor for the project is Star Construction Corp. of Stratford. The company hoped to start the project on Oct. 9 (after press time), estimating 150 work days will be needed to complete the job.

Maturo is seeking re-election in November.
