Dominick H. Ferrara Elementary School teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) CT, hosting a walk-a-thon to raise funds in support of the Branford Walk Like MADD on Saturday, Oct. 14.

From Oct. 2 to 6, all students completed one lap around the school track every day during recess, and all funds raised will support victims of drunk and drugged driving in Connecticut. Last year during its inaugural walk, the school collected more than $1,100 to benefit the Branford Walk Like MADD.

On Oct. 5, Ferrara students and faculty came together to complete a lap at the end of the school day with MADD CT, members of the superintendent’s office, and town officials.

Michelle Chamberlain of MADD said this lap, with more than 200 students, was amazing. Growing up in East Haven herself, she said it was great to have the school included in the walk.

Ferrara Principal Paul DeBernardo said it was a wonderful event, a tangible way to show students the power of being involved, and that the experience ties directly to lessons about empathy, helping other people, and making positive life choices.

The Branford Walk Like MADD 2017 departs the Branford Town Hall, 1019 Main Street on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. Registration and check-in begin at 8:30 a.m. For more information, visit walklikemadd.org.
