Fortuna-Giegerich-Fish Team Running for Re-election

First Selectman Carl P. Fortuna, Jr. (R), Selectman Scott Giegerich (R), and Bob Fish (R), treasurer for the Town of Old Saybrook, have announced their intent to run for re-election this November (“FGF 2017”). Elected to the Board of Selectmen in November 2011, Carl and Scott cite their record of accomplishments over the past six years. While the state struggles with a weak economic recovery, stumbles from one financial crisis to another, and continues to kick the can down the road, Old Saybrook’s financial condition has improved over the past six years, which was confirmed in the town’s most current municipal audit.

Old Saybrook has maintained fiscal prudence while consistently investing in smart short and long-term capital projects. The town’s rainy day fund is at a generational high and a long-term capital projects savings plan is also in place.

“I am proud of how our team has managed our municipal finances in this environment,” Fortuna said. “Unfortunately, I do not see the financial challenges that currently face the state going away any time soon.”

The Fortuna-Giegerich-Fish team has brought a leaner, more efficient government to town hall: a purchase order system has been instituted; job functions have been consolidated when opportunity presents; new employees contribute to a defined contribution plan (away from a traditional pension plan); and every town employee is on a high-deductible health care plan consistent with employees in the private sector.

“In tough economic times, we champion a pro-business climate in Old Saybrook in an effort to diversify the tax base,” Fortuna said. “At the same time, we never lose focus on quality of life issues for our residents.

“Truly, the public trust is a great one and I consider every day in office an honor. Old Saybrook is one of the finest communities in the state.”
