Region 4 Purchases Mislick Property Adjacent to High School

Region 4 has purchased the Mislick Property, 12 lots adjacent to Valley Regional High School. The $350,000 sale was completed on Aug. 31.

At the Sept. 7 regular BOE meeting, Superintendent of Schools Ruth Levy stated that obtaining this property was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and while no plans are in the books for it now, it gives Region 4 options in the future.

The Region 4 Board of Education (BOE) voted May 4 to allow Levy to negotiate the purchase; on Aug. 2 the board voted to approve the purchase agreement.

According to the Sept. 7 regular BOE meeting minutes, Levy noted that the funds came entirely from Region 4 sinking funds—excess revenues that are set aside earmarked to be used toward future capital expenses.

Prior to announcing the finalization of the sale, according to minutes, an unnamed Deep River resident stated opposition to the purchase of the land and Rick Daniels of Deep River expressed frustration at the property now being off of the tax rolls and the lack of advertisement of the purchase. BOE Chair Chris Riley noted the proposal had been listed on several agendas and discussed at public meetings.

Levy’s office referred calls for comment about the purchase of the property to Glowac, who could not be reached and did not return messages.
