Officials are investigating the cause of an early morning propane explosion that sent two residents to Bridgeport Hospital via Lifestar helicopter.

The occupants of the home have been identified as husband and wife Leo Hinkley, 64, andCandace Hinkley, 61. Both were transported to Bridgeport Hospital with severe burns and traumatic injuries. They are currently listed in critical condition and serious condition respectively.

The explosion occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. this morning, Sept. 21, in the Evergreen Park mobile Home complex on Route 81 in Clinton. According to the Clinton Police Department, calls poured in after 12:30 a.m. reporting home shaken by the blast. Shortly after, at 12:34 a.m., a caller reported a fire at the mobile home complex.

Responders to the park found a mobile home leveled by a blast. Leo and Candace Hinkley were pulled from the burning wreckage by members of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department and Police Department. Killingworth, Madison, and Old Saybrook responders assisted on the scene.

The Police Department warns that, due to the large amounts of debris propelled by the blast site high into surrounding tree limbs, the area is a safety hazard and should be avoided until a cleanup can be completed.

Several adjacent homes show signs of blast damage, but most neighbors have been allowed to remain in or return to their homes.

The Connecticut State Fire Marshal, Clinton Fire Marshal, and the Clinton Police are conducting a joint investigation into the origin and cause of the fire and explosion.
