Sperry Lane Application Withdrawn, Will Be Resubmitted

An application for close to 500 units of senior housing on Sperry Lane was withdrawn at the Planning & Zoning Commission (PZC) meeting on Sept. 6, with a modified, possibly reduced proposal expected to be submitted to the commission soon.

The proposed development would have added six buildings of age-restricted housing in the Foxon area of East Haven. Building plans included meeting rooms in each building, a clubhouse that could be used for activities or rented out, and on-site passive recreation such as a pond and walking trail.

Area residents had expressed concerns about blasting and additional traffic at previous PZC hearings on the proposal. PZC Chairman Peter Cianelli also mentioned blasting as a concern at the Sept. 6 meeting; two of the originally proposed six buildings would have required blasting.

Cianelli also said that more input was needed from the police and fire departments. He said the initial letters received from both departments were vague about how the approval of the development would affect fire and police service; he said he was told the PZC would receive finalized letters from them.

Town Attorney Alfred Zullo said he intended to set up meetings with the town engineer, Director of Economic Development Sal Brancati, and the applicants to have discussions to keep the project moving.

Attorney Bernard Pellegrino, who is representing the applicants, agreed to contact concerned residents.

Pellegrino was unavailable for additional comments as of press time.
