No Ethics Violation Found in Parente Case

The Board of Ethics met on Sept. 12 to hear a complaint brought against Town Council member and Public Services Superintendent of Operations Robert Parente. After both sides presented their information, the board found no violation against Parente.

The complaint alleged that because Parente voted on the town budget as a member of the Town Council, a budget that contained his own raise, he should have excused himself from the vote to avoid a conflict.

Parente said he would have excused himself if the voting was done line by line and his position came up, but the Town Council chose to vote on the budget as a whole.

Since the vote on the budget was done as a whole, and because those involved were aware of Parente’s position in the Public Services, the ethics board voted unanimously that there was no violation.

Parente said it would have been a disservice to the roughly 3,200 people he represents if he abstained from the budget vote.
