Branford's Ed Board Corrects Vote on Superintendent's Contract

A June 2017 unanimous vote to extend the Branford Superintendent of School's contract has now been amended to reflect one abstention. The vote had originally been recorded in the June 21, 2017 meeting minutes as a unanimous vote of 7-0.

The corrective measure was taken by Board of Education (BOE) chairman Michael Krause during the Sept. 13 full BOE meeting.  Krause explained what had sounded like a collective, unanimous "yes" vote at the June 21 meeting should have been followed by a request for any "no" votes and any "abstention" votes.

"Those that were in favor said 'yes,' and then I did not ask 'no's' and I did not ask abstensions, so that's why we're correcting it," said Krause.

On June 21, by not being able to voice her vote, BOE member Kate Marsland was unable to register her choice to abstain from the vote to extend the contract. An eighth BOE member, Maria Ehrhardt, was absent from the June meeting and did not participate in the June vote.

On September 13, members of the BOE voted unanimously to amend the June 21 meeting minutes to reflect the correction of one abstention and six votes in favor to extend the contract of Superintendent of Schools Hamlet Hernandez until June 30, 2020.
