Peter and Susan Gaeta have purchased Mill District School property at 112 Glenwood Road from the town of Clinton for $90,000, subject to Board of Finance approval. The couple’s plans for the iconic 1882 property are unknown at this time.

In an executive session, First Selectman Bruce Farmer, Selectman Carol Walter, Selectman John Giannotti, and Selectman Lynn Pinder unanimously voted to sell the property on July 26. Selectman Willie Fritz was absent from the meeting. The sale was subject to Board of Finance approval on Aug. 21 (after press time).

First Selectman Bruce Farmer, and Peter and Susan Gaeta, did not respond to multiple messages asking for comment.

The Mill District School is a one-room school house that was built in 1882. It was used as offices for the Board of Education and Clinton Youth & Family Services. It is now vacant.

When the BOS announced in November of last year that it was considering the sale of the building, some members of the public expressed a hope that the school house would be preserved.

Megan Stine, a past president of the Clinton Historical Society, told the Harbor News in December 2016 that “the school has historic value and we wanted to see it preserved.

“This 1882 building, with its lovely architectural features, could be sold and demolished,” Stein said. “The Town Plan of Conservation and Development states that town should preserve our historic treasures.”

The potential sale of the building was discussed at a November 2016 meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission, where it was decided that the sale of the building was consistent with the Plan of Conservation and Development.
