The Madison Historical Society’s commemorative exhibition Over Here, Over There: Madison in WWI received an award of merit from the Connecticut League of History Organizations (CLHO). The CLHO Award of Merit is a prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of Connecticut history. The panel noted the collaborative spirit of the exhibit, which brings together several town organizations to remember the sacrifices of those at home and those on the front during the American engagement in the war.

The Madison Historical Society partnered with the Charlotte L. Evarts Memorial Archives and also collaborated with the Scranton Library and with Daniel Hand High School students and local boy scouts.

The exhibit focuses on the Madison people who served in the military, the Red Cross, and humanitarian organizations, as well those who served on the home front. It explores political issues, the rise of the media, censorship and propaganda, and the role of women. Uniforms, weapons, memorabilia, and photographs are on display and there are multimedia presentations with readings from letters and diaries and original sound recordings of popular music from the era. There is a children’s corner designed to be both educational and entertaining.

Thirteen awards were bestowed at the CLHO annual conference in June, honoring people, projects, exhibits, books, and organizations.

The exhibition, on view at Lee’s Academy and in the Memorial Town Hall, is open Saturdays through November from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public. For more information on the exhibit or to view the digital archive of related images, visit www.madisonhistory.org.
