Lots of Choices in Clinton’s Primaries


With the deadline to file primary challenges past, the Town Clerk’s Office has released the names that voters will see on the ballots next month the for the Tuesday, Sept. 12 primary elections. This year Clinton voters on the Republican and Democratic sides have choices.

Voters are only eligible to vote for the candidates of the party for which they are registered. While it’s too late for a resident that is already registered with one party to switch to another, unregistered voters still have time to register with either party to vote in the primary.

Democrats

For the Democratic Primary, voters have a choice between the Democratic Town Committee (DTC)-endorsed Christine Goupil and challenger Lynn Pinder for first selectman. Goupil has served on the Planning & Zoning Commission (PZC), while Pinder is currently on the Board of Selectmen.

For the Board of Selectman, Democrats can choose two of the following three candidates: DTC-endorsed Tim Guerra and Jack Scherban and challenger Willie Fritz. Guerra serves on the PZC, while Scherban is the chair of the Board of Finance. Fritz is a former five-term first selectman currently serving on the Board of Selectmen.

For the Board of Finance, voters may cast a vote for three of the following candidates: John Olsen, Dana Onofrio, Michael Smith, and Leah Saunders. Olsen, Onofrio, and Smith were endorsed; Saunders, an incumbent, challenged to have her name on the ballot.

Republicans

On the Republican side, voters have the choice to vote for either Republican Town Committee(RTC)-endorsed Anselmo Delia or challenger Kevin Hecht for judge of probate.

For first selectman, voters have a choice of RTC-endorsed Bruce Farmer, or Kirk Carr. Farmer is the current first selectman; Carr is an alternate on the Board of Finance.

For the Board of Selectmen, Republican primary voters may choose two of the following candidates: John Giannotti, Carol Walter, and Phil Sengle. Giannotti and Walter are currently members of the Board of Selectmen, while Sengle serves on the Board of Police Commissioners. Walter and Giannotti were endorsed by the RTC.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 12 in the Green Room at Town Hall. Absentee ballots will be available on Aug. 22.
