Reports of red flares spotted late Wednesday night sparked a U.S. Coast Guard search of Long Island Sound off the coast of Madison. As of Thursday morning, the search is suspended pending further information.

According to U.S. Coast Guard officials, crews were on the water looking for a possible missing boat since late last night after receiving the report of the flares at about 10:40 p.m. on Aug. 9. Fire departments across the shoreline came to aid with the search.

"We launched one Coast Guard small boat from Station New Haven and they searched with three fire boats...That was until about 3 a.m.," said Lt. Alaina Fagan of the Coast Guard. "Then our other Station New London small boat relieved our small boats and fireboats and they continued searching until first light."

An aircraft from the Cape Cod Coast Guard station, which joined in the search early this morning, aided search efforts.

With no developments at this time, the search has now been suspended.

"The search has been suspended pending further information," said Fagan. "Search conditions were ideal and all of our assets saturated the search area. There were no other signs of distress besides the initial flare sighting."

Madison Police say no one has been reported missing at this time.
