On June 24, Boy Scout Troop 12 of Essex embarked on a week-long high adventure trip to Rocky Mountain High Adventure base in Poncha Springs, Colorado.

The trip included a day of whitewater rafting, rockwall climbing, and a three-day trek on the Colorado trail; including a grueling ascent of Mt. Shavano. The three-day trek began at 8,500 feet of elevation and ended at the peak of Mt. Shavano, 14,249 feet above sea level. The final day of the trek included a push to the summit, including a 3,000-foot elevation gain and a 10-mile hike out of the San Isabel National Forrest. In total, Troop 12 covered more than 50 miles of mountain, trail, and river.
