Clinton Dems Announce Slate; Primary Petitions Underway

The Clinton Democratic Town Committee (DTC) has announced its endorsements for the municipal elections with a slate highlighted by Christine Goupil for first selectman. Several high-profile candidates are expected to call a primary in September, however.

Joining Goupil on the slate for Board of Selectmen are Tim Guerra and Jack Scherban. Goupil and Guerra are members of the Planning & Zoning Commission, while Scherban is the chairman of the Board of Finance. Notably absent from the slate are longtime selectmen Willie Fritz and Lynn Pinder.

DTC Chair Andrea Reu said she is “very excited” about the fresh faces that will be on the slate in November.

“We think we can get Clinton to shine again,” said Reu.

Fritz and Pinder have both told the Harbor News that they will file papers to run in a primary.

“I want to stay on the board. I think I’m valuable,” said Fritz.

Fritz will run for the Board of Selectmen while Pinder will challenge for the first selectman’s seat. Leah Saunders will also petition to retain her seat on the Board of Finance. Candidates have until Aug. 9 to file primary papers.

For the Board of Finance, the DTC endorsed incumbent John Olsen, Dara Onofrio, and Michael Smith.

On the Board of Education, the candidates nominated are incumbent Erica Gelven, Jason Adler, and Kimberly Russo.

The DTC nominated Ellen Dahlgren, Aman Singh, and Michael Rossi for full seats on the Planning & Zoning Commission. Dahlgren and Singh are incumbents. Bethany Knight was endorsed for an alternate seat.

Lynn Hidek and Ed Tessman were endorsed to be Police Commission members.

The Zoning Board of Appeals candidates endorsed are incumbents Charlie McEvoy and Bertram Schmitz. Incumbent Nancy Stone was endorsed as the alternate.

Dolly Mezzetti was endorsed for the Board of Assessment Appeals.

Republicans selected their candidates on July 20 (see the story in last week’s issue or at Zip06.com). Primary votes take place Sept. 12, while election day is Nov. 7.
