Madison Political Parties Announce Candidate Slates

With just a little more than three months until the November election, Madison Republicans and Democrats have put forward their respective candidate slates for the upcoming election. While some boards will have contested seats, current First Selectman Tom Banisch (R) is running unopposed.

GOP Candidates

On July 18, the Madison Republican Town Committee met to vote and approve its slate for the November 2017 election.

Banisch, who recently announced he is seeking re-election, will lead the ticket. For the Board of Selectmen (BOS), incumbent Bruce Wilson and new candidate Jean Ferris join Banisch on the ballot.

For the Board of Education (BOE), incumbents Jessica Bowler and John Dean are seeking another term and are joined by Dr. Violet McNerney.

For the Board of Finance (BOF), the Republicans put forward Ken Kaminsky, Peter Roos, and current BOE Chair Jean Fitzgerald.

For the Board of Assessment Appeals, William Lewis is seeking re-election. For the Zoning Board of Appeals, William Piggott and Jeannie Stevens are both seeking another term and Charon Squitero is seeking another term as the Zoning Board of Appeals alternate.

The Democratic Slate

On July 23, the Madison Democratic Town Committee met to vote and approve its slate for the 2017 municipal elections, but did not put forward a candidate for first selectmen. Democratic Town Committee Chair Peggy Lyons said in a statement that she regrets not being able to put up a candidate for that position.

“We had hoped that Joan Walker would be able to run again given her strong showing against Tom Banisch in the last municipal election, but personal health issues have kept her on the sidelines for now. However, I am very excited to have such a highly qualified slate of candidates for the 2017 election that offer a real choice to the voters of Madison. Our Democratic ticket gives townspeople an opportunity for balanced, co-operative town government rather than single-party rule.”

For the BOS, Al Goldberg is running for his fourth term and is joined by current selectman Scott Murphy, who is running in his first election since filling the board seat left by Walker in December 2016.

For the BOE, incumbent Alison Keating has been endorsed again along with Matt Parthasarthy, who currently sits on the Planning & Zoning Commission, and Emily Rosenthal, who currently serves on the Beach & Recreation Commission.

For the BOF, the committee endorsed Judith Hession Friedman, who currently serves on the Board of Assessment Appeals.

To round out the ticket, the committee endorsed Jason Brown and Rich Gilbert for the Zoning Board of Appeals and Shirley Taylor for the Board of Assessment Appeals.
