$20K Alcoa Foundation Grant Assists Branford's Read to Grow

A $20,000 grant from Alcoa Foundation has provided significant support to the early childhood literacy work of Read to Grow during 2016 and 2017.

With the funding, the Branford-based nonprofit provided 1,075 new Literacy Packets to parents of newborns in Yale-New Haven and St. Raphael's hospitals.

The grant also supplied more than 800 new bilingual Spanish-English books for children who receive services through more than a dozen other nonprofits in the Greater New Haven area that are partnered with Read to Grow. These nonprofits serve families with low incomes or experiencing difficulties that put family members at risk.

"Grants like that one from Alcoa Foundation --- now called Arconic Foundation – not only give us the vital resources we need to reach families most in need of children's books and information that includes early brain development. They also reflect the important investments Alcoa has made in its communities," said Kyn Tolson, director at Read to Grow.

The Alcoa/Arconic foundations have supported Read to Grow over the years.

Arconic Power and Propulsion, formerly known as Alcoa Howmet, has been in Branford for decades. It makes advanced coatings for the aerospace and power generation industries that protect against effects of oxidation and corrosion.

Arconic Foundation invests in hundreds of communities around the world, often supporting nonprofit organizations that focus on education, with the goal of developing a well-prepared workforce and robust pipeline of future talent.
