Guilford Democrats Approve Election Slate at Caucus

Guilford Democrats formally approved their slate for the 2017 election at their caucus on July 20. First selectman candidate Matt Hoey leads the ticket along with fellow Board of Selectmen (BOS) candidates Lou Federici and Sandy Ruoff.

Federici is a current Board of Finance (BOF) member and Ruoff has been the Guilford Free Library director for more than 30 years. For the BOF, incumbent Ken Gamerman has been re-nominated and Veronica Wallace, who previously served on the BOS, is running for Federici’s vacated seat.

For the Board of Education (BOE), Democrats re-nominated incumbent Chris Moore and nominated political newcomer Moira Radar. Hoey said he is excited about the slate and looking forward to the election season.

“The first reaction is it’s real and it feels good. I am honored and thrilled that I am the Democratic candidate,” he said. “I’ve been a large part of getting this community where it is today and I want to take it to the next level and I can’t do that by myself. We have a tremendous team.”

Leading up to the election, Hoey said one of the primary themes of his campaign is citizen engagement—going out and talking to voters and finding ways to communicate with all citizens in town.

“I am look forward to having the opportunity to get input from the community about what they think is important,” he said. “I have some ideas of where we need to go and I need that validated, but I also need the input from the community as to where they think they want to go and what it should look like and maybe some suggestions on how to get there.”
