As part of a trend of offering complex medical services outside of centralized hospitals, Yale New Haven Hospital formally opened its new North Haven Medical Center at Devine Street in North Haven, offering specialized services including pulmonology, cardiology, neurology, gynecology, and gastroenterology.

“We have a dedicated group of primary care and specialty care clinicians who will work as a team to provide comprehensive care to our patients,” said Dr. Prathibha Varkey, president and CEO of Northeast Medical Group (NEMG) and senior vice president of Yale New Haven Health.

As part of the “Yale Health Care System medical epicenter,” as First Selectman Michael Freda described it, the approximately 20,000 square foot building has on-site X-Ray and laboratory services, and an on-site walk-in center open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We plan to add endocrinology to better serve our diabetic population and behavioral health in the near future, as well as other services to help us better deliver more comprehensive care,” said Varkey, “We have an active patient and family advisory group helping us to understand the needs of our patients and will continue to seek their input as we look to expand our service offerings to the North Haven community.”

Varkey said that NEMG is a multispecialty group consisting of more than 830 physicians and clinicians across 125 practices from New York to Rhode Island. The North Haven facility marks a new approach for the group.

“We designed this first of its kind NEMG multispecialty site...to allow us to further that commitment,” said Varkey, “This facility is the result of a consolidation of several smaller practices located throughout the community.”

Varkey said Town of North Haven has been a “true partner” for the NEMG and Yale New Haven Health in the development of the Devine Street campus, and that Freda has been very supportive for many years,

She also wanted to thank Fire Chief Paul Januszewski for his help with this project, saying he has been instrumental in ensuring that 911 response calls will be well coordinated at the new NEMG facility.

“We look forward to providing exceptional and convenient care to our patients and the greater North Haven community,” said Varkey.

Freda said the benefits of this new building include increased revenue for the town in that district, and that other business on State Street are seeing more foot traffic come through as a result of new employees being hired at the medical center.

“That epicenter right now is providing more taxable revenue to the Town of North Haven than was being delivered years ago when AT&T was in the building,” Freda said.

Assessor Gary Johns said the new medical building will have some effect on the Grand List this year, and once it is 100 percent up-and-running, the town can bill for the entire assessment.
