Guilford Republicans Build 2017 Election Slate

With election season seemingly right around the corner, the Guilford Republican Recruitment Committee has already put forward a nearly complete slate of candidates for the 2017 November election. The party released its slate on June 22. The final list of candidates will be formally put forward after the Republican Caucus on July 20.

Leading the ticket in the race for first selectman is Bob Hartmann. Joining him on the ticket for the Board of Selectman (BOS) is incumbent Charles Havrda and current Board of Education (BOE) member Susan Koch Renner. If elected, Hartmann said he hopes to build on the success of First Selectman Joe Mazza.

“Under Joe Mazza, Guilford became substantially stronger fiscally and in public services,” he said. “Guilford has never been stronger. Going forward, my job is to maintain this fine record while protecting our citizens from certain state policies that would, if enacted, prove to be unfair, expensive, and regressive. We will have to make even harder decisions about spending.”

In addition, Hartmann said he would work to expand the town’s Grand List.

“I will work hard to welcome diversified, clean new businesses to Guilford to help grow our Grand List, giving relief to home owners, provide local jobs, and bring a sense of prosperity at all levels,” he said.

Filling out the rest of the republican ticket, the committee put forward incumbents Peter Goletz and Jeffrey Beatty for the Board of Finance (BOF) as well as Jonathan Trotta, who served on the BOF two years ago.

For the BOE, the committee put forward incumbents Ted Sands and Amy Sullivan. Republican Town Committee Chair Gloria Nemczuk said the committee is still interviewing for one more candidate for the BOE. From here, the nominees move on to the Republican Caucus on July 20.

“We will present those names and then afterwards, of course, anybody can nominate any other Republican for each of those offices,” said Nemczuk.

Guilford Democrats announced their slate in May with current BOF Chair and First Selectman candidate Matt Hoey leading the ticket along with fellow Board of Selectmen candidates Lou Federici and Sandy Ruoff.
