The digging and grading has begun. Excavators and dump trucks from Schumack Construction are on siteto start construction of the new 31-space public parking lot at 221 Main Street.

The new parking lot should be completed and ready for use before the end of this summer season.

The project site is across the street from the Town Green and the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and a decade ago was a site of the town’s police station.

In addition to the new parking lot, the undeveloped town-owned land north and west of the new parking lot will add public amenities like a new grass-planted area, public benches, and a stone planter.

Schumack Construction’s bid to complete the work was $374,969.

The costs of engineering and construction on this project are offset by a $500,000 Small-Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant the town received in 2015.

When completed, this will be phase one of a larger planned project that could include more public recreational amenities and a connection park linking Main Street and Lynde Street. No funding is yet secured to complete this second phase.
