John Winthrop Middle School had two 7th grade teams make it to the Final Four of the State Debate Championships, held on May 22 at the Old State House in Hartford. John Winthrop teams had to play each other, and Ava Cunningham and Jordan Azzinaro won over Ben Proctor and Nic Wyszkowski. In the finals, Cunningham and Azzinaro were able to win over the Westfield Academy team to become State Debate Champions.

This year’s topic was “Resolved: All media, including social media, must be fact checked before printing, broadcasting, or posting items related to a political campaign.” Teams had to prepare both sides of the resolve and be prepared for cross-examination from the opposing team. A dinner and award ceremony was held on May 30 at the Mark Twain House.
