On May 25, members of Mission Smiley at Chester Elementary School took a field trip to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. The committee sponsored a spirit day back in April and raised more than $120 to give to the hospital. While there, the students got a tour of the facility and were able to ask any questions they had about the hospital.

The Mission Smiley committee was formed two years ago by Lindsey and Lauren Valentino, then 5th graders, who wanted to spread kindness around the school. Every year a new group of 6th graders is picked to carry on the tradition. The main project for Mission Smiley is creating more than 100 smiley faces with inspirational messages on them to spread around the school. The group also does various service learning projects throughout the year.
