Wanted: Host Families for Summer Exchange Program

Valley Regional High school is searching for families in Deep River, Chester, and Essex to host high school students from China participating in a summer immersion program. Families would host the students from Sunday, July 16 through Saturday, July 29.

The Chinese students will be from 14 to 17 years old and will have studied English for up to eight years. They are coming here to not only improve their language skills, but also to learn more about American culture, in comparison to that of their home city of Chongqing in southwest China. The school is also looking to place the two teachers who will accompany them.

According to Assistant Superintendent Kristina Martineau, host families don’t need to have students currently enrolled at VRHS, and can host up to four students. There will be a $250 stipend provided to each family per student hosted. Students will arrive at VRHS between 7 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, and will depart from the school on July 29; there is no airport transportation obligation on the part of the host family.

The host family will be required to provide meals and transportation to and from VRHS Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the camp itself. It is also required that host families complete an application, participate in a reference check process, and include the visiting student in family activities and conversation. They also need to provide a bedroom, which can be shared either with another student or a family member of the same gender and of a similar age.
