The skate park at Bittner Park in Guilford has been closed for renovations set to take place this summer. Guilford Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard said the skate park’s current state led to the decision to demolish it.

The surface of the park will be restored and the ramps and jumps will be put back into the park afterward.

“The cracks are significant,” says Maynard. “We will not replace with asphalt because it will eventually crack again. We are using post-tension concrete that has a 20-year warranty against cracking.”

There will be a few other additions to Bittner Park apart from the renovation of the skate park.

“The cost is $164,834 which includes engineering, lining for pickle ball [court], and adding two basketball hoops and lines,” said Maynard. “The entire area is 200 feet by 85 feet. The front area is the ramps for skateboarding. The back area has two pickle ball courts. The basketball court will go across the pickle ball courts.”

Last week, the ramps were scheduled to be taken apart and removed and demolition is set to begin this week. Maynard said he expects the project to be complete in late July.
