Valley Students Compete at Woodstock Model UN

The Valley Regional High School Model United Nations team traveled to Woodstock Academy for a Model United Nations competition on May 6. Nineteen Valley delegates were members of the following committees: World Health Organization dealing with HIV/Aids, Historic Security Council dealing with genocide in Darfur, The Disarmament and International Security Committee dealing with the Syrian Crisis, United Nations Department Programme dealing with aid distribution and relief following Hurricane Matthew in the Caribbean, NGO (Non-Governmental-Organizations) discussing pressing issues facing the country of Yemen, ECDC (European Center for Disease Control) devising a plan to stop the spread of a disease before it becomes a pandemic, and a United Nations Security Council dealing with the North Korean Humanitarian and Nuclear Crisis.

Valley delegates won five awards in European CDC-Zane Bouregy representing Russia won “Best Delegate”; European CDC-Maggie Walsh representing the UK won “Honorable Mention”; DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee)-Mike Leffingwell representing Germany won “Outstanding Delegate”; DISEC-Connor Riordan representing the UK won “Honorable Mention”; and UNDP (United Nations Department Programme)-Lydia Wiernik-Partenio representing the U.K. won “Outstanding Delegate.”

Model United Nations is an educational authentic simulation and academic activity that introduces students to the world of diplomacy, international relations, negotiation, decision making, and the United Nations. Valley Regional High School usually participates in five Model U.N.’s throughout the year.
