Old Saybrook High School’s Spanish 5 Honors class recently took real-world learning to a whole new level. They started off the year reading Sonia Nazario’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel,

Enrique’s Journey, a story about a Honduran boy and his arduous travels to find his mother in the United States. Reading the book inspired the students to share their passion with the entire school community. To achieve this goal, the class conducted a school-wide seminar on the topic of immigration. On the day of the presentation, the student body responded very positively to the information provided, and participated in small group discussions led by the Spanish 5 Honors students following the presentation. On March 21, the Spanish 5 Honors students presented to the entirety of the school in order to raise awareness and educate their community on the topic of immigration. A post survey was given in the discussions and the Spanish 5 Honors class is currently analyzing this data.
