New Branford Garden Club Planters Adorn Blackstone Entrance

While the Branford Garden Club (BGC) decorates the James Blackstone Memorial Library for the holidays and helps with plantings and other items, the club always wanted to do something significant for the library; considered the architectural crown jewel of Branford.

James Blackstone, a lifetime resident of Branford, was born in 1793; and the library, a gift from his son, was begun in 1893.

In the fall of 2016, at the suggestion of the outgoing BGC president, Bonnie McKirdy, it was decided to purchase two large planters; one for each of the marble pilasters on either side of the library's main entrance. After getting permission from the Library's Board of Trustees, two large Roman-style planters ( 47 inches in diameter) were purchased. They were put in place at the library and planted with flowers by BGC members on May 20.

On June 30, Library Director Karen Jensen will welcome the entire Garden Club membership and many local dignitaries to an official Dedication Ceremony-Cocktail Party.
