Zoning Department Reminds East Haven Residents of Lawn Maintenance Standards

It’s that time of year again, as the days grow longer and warmer, when homeowners are tasked with maintaining lawns and other vegetation on their properties. Christopher Soto, the town’s blight enforcement officer would like to remind all residents that the Town of East Haven has specific regulations as to how lawns, shrubs, and other vegetation must be maintained in town.

Please note that the following standards must be met:

• Grass, weeds, and undergrowth must be kept below six inches.

• All lawns and vegetation must be kept free of debris, materials, or conditions that would cause a health, safety, or fire hazard or create a blighted condition.

• Ragweed, poison ivy, poison sumac, poison oak, and similar plants are considered to be a public nuisance and prohibited.

• Bushes, trees, and other vegetation cannot obstruct streets, sidewalks, or driveways.

• All landscaping features must be maintained and cared for; this includes living and decorative features. If any landscaping feature, either living, decorative, and/or structural falls into disrepair, dies or is damaged beyond repair, or becomes a nuisance or detriment to public health and/or safety that feature will be repaired or replaced.

As part of the town’s code of ordinances, the Zoning Department has the additional responsibilities to enforce the various blight ordinances that include the provisions concerning lawns and landscaping. Any resident with questions or concerns may contact the Office of Planning & Zoning at 203-468-3357 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The office can also be reached by email at eh.zoning@gmail.com.
