On Wednesday, June 14, North Branford residents are encouraged to attend the second annual Flag Day Ceremony outside Town Hall. The moving event will kick-off a month-long display of North Branford’s annual “Honor Them with a Flag” effort, a fundraising program to benefit veterans that fills the lawn at Town Hall with scores of small American flags, each representing those who serve or have served.

Residents have until Tuesday, June 13 to get their order in to have a flag included in the display. “Honor Them with a Flag” orders are being accepted by Northford and North Branford Women’s Clubs. Residents can purchase a 12” x 18” flag for $10, with 100 percent of proceeds to benefit veterans. Flags are purchased in memory of a current or past service person. The flag will be personalized with name and rank, service branch and dates of service, inscribed on a white ribbon. All flags will be displayed in front of North Branford Town Hall from Flag Day, June 14 through the Fourth of July.

The “Honor Them with a Flag” display will help set the stage for North Branford’s National Flag Day ceremony, which will be held at the flagpole in front of Town Hall on June 14 at 7 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend.

At the May 16 Town Council meeting, Flag Day event organizer and North Branford Air Force veteran Chuck Larkins thanked the Town Council for continuing support of the Flag Day ceremony, now entering its second year.

“We had a great event last year and we’re looking forward to another one this year,” said Larkins.

Helping to decorate last year’s event were 125 small American flags surrounding the base of the main flag pole on the Town Hall campus. The 2016 “Honor Them with a Flag” effort raised $1,250 ($10 per flag) in donations given to veterans’ organizations. The women’s clubs share the costs to pay for flag supplies so that 100 percent of the donations will go directly to programs for veterans. The women’s clubs receive a big assist in building the field of flags from local boy scout troops as well as the Flag Day ceremony committee.
