Schools Budget Passes, Town Budget Denied in Clinton

At the second budget referendum held today, May 24, voters rejected the town budget of $17,537,690 but approved the Board of Education budget of $34, 420,452.

The total number of voters was 3,252 with 1,613 voting for and 1,631 against on the town side, and 1,689 for and 1,554 against on the Board of Education plan.

The overall budget was proposed at $51,958,142 in expenditures, a 3.13 increase over last year’s budget.

Voters rejected the first proposed budgets at a referendum held on May 10. That led the Board of Finance to reduce the overall proposed budget by 1.03 percent. The cuts amounted to $149,769 off the original proposed town budget and $325,034 off the original Board of Education budget.

At the first budget meeting voters did pass a bonding package of $7,120,00 for construction projects around the town.

While Clinton was able to pass both budgets on the first referendum in 2016, 2017 marked the seventh time since 2009 that the town failed to pass both referendums on the first ballot.

The Board of Finance will now make a further reduction to the town budget, which will return to referendum in June. Check back for details.
