05/19/2017 12:00 AMThe town and schools’ proposed 2017-’18 budget passed referendum on May 16. The total budget is $96,568,811, a $2,093,934 or 2.2 percent increase from current spending.
The Board of Education’s budget is $51,648,899, a 1.7 percent or $849,614 increase from current spending. The town government budget is $44,919,912, a 2.8 percent or $1,244,320 increase from current spending.
As previously reported, the mill rate will not change due to the town using previous surplus funds to offset the increase.
A total of 847 people voted on the budget at referendum, with 679 in favor and 168 not in favor. Voter turnout was 5.1 percent.
“This was a particularly challenging budget,” said First Selectman Michael Freda.
Freda cited the loss of state revenues and a “leap of faith” of adding $1 million in building permits for the old Pratt & Whitney site as reasons for the challenge. Freda said he still expects the deal on the Pratt & Whitney site to come through.
