05/17/2017 09:05 AMThe George Flynn Classical Concert Series presents Fandango! for its final concert of its 19th season on Sunday, June 4 at 4 p.m. in the Andrews Memorial Town Hall. Fandango! is a quartet from Chicago that features a flute, a guitar, a violin, and a cello, and performs “a toe-tappingly spicy mix of Latin, Spanish, Sephardic, Balkan, and classical music,” according to organizers.
The unusual combination of instruments is what attracted Elaine Godowsky, president of the George Flynn Concert Series, to Fandango!
“The combination sounded so interesting, and like something the audience will respond to,” Godowsky said.
The quartet’s musicians, Eugenia Moliner, Desirée Ruhstrat, Denis Azabagic, and David Cunliffe, all had what Godowsky called “impressive backgrounds.” All four have received awards and played at venues around the world. In fact, all four musicians are from different countries. Moliner is from Spain, Ruhstrat from the United States, Azabagic from the former Yugoslavia, and Cunliffe from the United Kingdom.
As with all of the series’ offering, admission is free, thanks to a fund established in 1997 by Clinton resident George Flynn.
According to the group’s website http://georgeflynnclassicalconcerts.com, “The George S. Flynn Concerts are made possible by a trust fund Mr. Flynn established in his will. It was his great desire to provide ‘classical music concerts for the benefit, education, and pleasure of the inhabitants of the town of Clinton.’ It is in his honor and to his memory that we dedicate these concerts.”
Of Flynn’s generous donation to the town, Godowsky said, “he wanted to bring his joy of music to Clinton and surrounding areas,” and provide “really fabulous artists for free.”
Though the George Flynn concert series is in its 19th year, Godowsky said she still gets excited to put on the concerts in Clinton.
“The audience is so charged. Let’s say the concert starts at 4, they’ll start lining up at 2:30,” Godowsky said. “My favorite part is the reaction of the audience.”
Jim Beloff, vice-president of the George Flynn concert series, praised the auditorium at Town Hall as having “extraordinary acoustics.” The space seats 450 guests. Tickets for Clinton residents are available now, and tickets become available to non-residents two weeks before the concert. The show is expected to last between 1 ½ and 2 hours with an intermission.
While the June 4 concert is the last of the current season, the 20th annual George Flynn Classical Concert Series begins in July. The group is planning for special events to commemorate the 20th season, including a performance by the famous singer Michael Feinstein at The Morgan School on Sunday, July 16.
