Westbrook’s Tennis Teams Remain Red Hot; Baseball Picks Up First Victory

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team had two contests last week and emerged victorious in both of them to remain undefeated at 8-0.

The Knights posted a 5-2 win at Granby Memorial on April 17. Senior Gus Marx won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles spot; senior Dylan Martinson won his match, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3; sophomore Nate Comment won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot; and senior Jason Raunikar grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 5. In doubles, seniors Austin Herzy and Phil Hartzell won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 position.

On April 19, Westbrook played at Cromwell and won their seventh 7-0 decision on the season. Marx won 6-2, 6-3; senior Dave Amendola prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2; Martinson won 6-0, 6-0; Comment earned a 6-0, 6-0 win; and Raunikar won by default. For doubles, Herzy and Hartzell claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory, plus Kevin Dickey and Binak Cecunjanin won by default.

Two days later, Westbrook was on the road against Haddam-Killingworth and won 7-0.

The next day, the Knights were back home to face Old Lyme and swept the Wildcats 7-0. Marx won 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-2; Amendola claimed a win, 6-2, 6-3; Martinson won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4; Comment was victorious, 6-1, 6-1; and Raunikar won by default. In doubles, Herzy and Hartzell won 6-1, 6-1; while juniors Dickey and Cecunjanin won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook improved to 7-1 by earning a pair of wins in last week’s action.

The Knights played at North Branford and won 5-2 on April 17. Senior Casey Burns grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles spot; and sophomore Sara Farnoli won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2. In doubles play, junior duo Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1; sophomore Savannah Marshall and junior Victoria Koplas won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2; and juniors Lexi Vumbeck and Alyssa Esposito claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3.

On April 19, Westbrook hosted Cromwell and fought for a 4-3 victory. Burns won 6-0, 6-0 to remain undefeated on the season; Farnoli posted a 6-2, 6-0 win; and senior Aerial Ulanowicz won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Vumbeck and Esposito won their doubles match 6-3, 6-1 to solidify the victory for the Knights.

Baseball

The Knights played two games last week and lost the first one, but then earned their initial victory of the season to bring their record to 1-7.

On April 17, Westbrook lost at home to East Hampton, 18-4. Junior Jack Hayes was 2-for-4 with two RBI, sophomore David McCain went 3-for-4 with one RBI, and sophomore Cameron Marshall went 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Knights

Next, Westbrook traveled to West Rock Park to play Creed-Hillhouse and prevailed 16-11 on April 19. The Knights scored in every inning of the game, but they were still down 11-9 going into the top of the seventh inning. Westbrook put seven runs in the board in the final frame to come away with their first win of the year. Freshman Jack Farrell went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, Hayes was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and sophomore Daniel Perreault went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

Softball

Westbrook took a pair of recent defeats to move to 3-5 on the year.

The Knights began the week at Cromwell and lost 15-3 on April 17. Senior Alexa Mulvihill went 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Knights, while fellow senior Biance Ferrucci went 1-3 with a run and a RBI.

Two days later, Westbrook returned home to face Haddam-Killingworth and dropped a 19-4 contest. Mulvihill was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI, and freshman Jamie Merola went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
