04/04/2017 12:36 PMNorth Branford: To celebrate Arbor Day, Friday, April 28, 2017, beginning at 1:15 pm, a group of North Branford Intermediate School students will work with members of the North Branford Land Conservation Trust, Inc. (NBLCT) to plant trees on the corner of Doral Farms Road and Route 80. Students chosen to participate were recognized by their science teacher, Nathan Bowers, for their essays about Arbor Day.
In 1854 J Sterling Morton moved from Detroit to Nebraska. He and other pioneers noticed a lack of trees, which were needed to act as windbreaks to stabilize the soil and to give shade from the sun. Morton planted many trees around his own home and encouraged others to do the same.
In 1885, Arbor Day, a holiday to promote tree planting and the care of our natural environment, became a legal holiday and was moved to April 22, Morton's birthday. In 1989 the official state holiday was moved to the last Friday in April. On this day, people are encouraged to get their hands in the dirt and plant and/or care for trees, bushes and plants.
NBLCT is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to acquire and maintain open space and to promote the conservation of land and natural resources within the Town of North Branford and environs. For more information about NBLCT go to the website
