Accident Involving School Bus Leaves Several Injured in North Haven

Five people were injured due to a March 31 motor vehicle accident involving a school bus, according to North Haven Fire Chief Paul Januszewski.

According to a press release issued by the Fire Department, the department was notified of a crash near the off-ramp of exit 11 on I-91 northbound around 10 a.m.

A 45-year-old man from Ledyard driving a Ford F-150 pick-up truck rear-ended a school bus that was stopped at the end of the off-ramp.

The bus had 29 middle and high school students and three adults on it at the time of the crash. The students were from John S. Martinez School and High School in the Community in New Haven, and the bus was headed to Wallingford for a field trip.

The release stated that there were several injuries, but none were believed to be life threatening. The driver of the truck was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, two middle school students were taken to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and two other middle school students were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus.

Two more middle school students were evaluated for injuries and released on the scene.

Per the release, the bus was not seriously damaged and was allowed to continue after being evaluated. The uninjured students and adults proceeded to Wallingford for the field trip.

The New Haven Board of Education also responded to the accident, and notified parents of all the students who were on the bus. Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident.
