Guilford Knights of Columbus Hold Fish Fry Fridays

Grab a bite of seafood and support local charities. Every Friday during Lent leading up to Easter, the Knights of Columbus Council #3928 hosts its annual Fish Fry to offer some good food, good company, and chance to support a good cause.

The Knights of Columbus first started the fish fry back in 2011 as a way to give back to the community. All residents, regardless of denomination or whether they observe Lent, are welcome to attend.

Dinner is served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and meal offerings include, of course, a fish dinner with fries and coleslaw for $12 as well as different sides including clam chowder and stuffed clams as well, and offerings for the kids. Soda, water, and coffee are available.

Knights of Columbus member and one of five co-chairs of the event Ken Costello said all members pitch in to bring this event to life.

“The Knights of Columbus do all of the legwork,” he said. “We have 47-plus volunteers and then when it is all said and done after the expenses are paid, we keep 50 percent of the profit and the rest goes to the charities.”

Each Friday dinner has two featured charities. This year’s charities include Guilford ABC, the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department, Shoreline Hugs, the Guilford High School Interact Club, and many others.

“In the past seven years we have given away over $100,000 to charity,” said Costello.

Over the course of the event, Costello said the Knights go through about 150 to 200 pounds of fish per week and serve close to 250 to 300 meals. With two charities on the docket each night, Costello said he has seen attendance jump a bit this year, but he is always glad to see the regulars, too.

“There are some regulars who come in every week,” he said. “They come in at five o’clock and they sit at their table and they make a night out if it—it doesn’t matter who we are supporting.”

Costello said the Knights are pleased to be able to put on events like this each year.

“This is how we give back to our community, by doing things like this,” he said.

Fish Fry Fridays take place each Friday during Lent until Easter Sunday, April 16. Tickets are sold at the door and reservations are not needed. The event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 390 South Union Street. For more information, visit www.kofc3928.com.
