Athletes get awards banquets and academics get certificates, but at the Board of Education meeting on March 21, the board took the opportunity to recognize the art teachers and students throughout the district who have excelled.

Superintendent of Schools Tom Scarice said the district had a great showing at the Future Choices Art Show this year and he was proud to recognize all who were involved.

“There were 245 works of art from 24 area high schools at this show,” he said, noting that “66 of them were from Daniel Hand High School.”

The 2017 Future Choices Art Show Award Winners are as follows:

In addition, students Patrick Wade and Claire Graves received the Lyme Academy’s Merits Scholarships, a $15,000 annual scholarship for up to four years should the student elect to enroll in a BFA program.

Scarice said the value of the arts program at the district can’t be overestimated.

“One of the very first interactions I had with a student here was a student who told me that her place of solace was up in the [art] wing at Hand,” said Scarice. “…It is not just the artwork, the relationships that are formed up there—it is truly remarkable.”
