MADE in Madison Holds ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ Display

Ever wondered if your kids are hiding anything from you? Particularly things that may be harmful to them? MADE in Madison has a solution. On Wednesday, April 5, MADE hosts the Hidden in Plain Sight event, a chance for parents to learn about and identify indicators of drug or alcohol use teens may be hiding in their rooms.

Hidden in Plain Sight is an interactive display set up at the town campus in Madison. The display features a typical teenagers bedroom and visitors are invited to go through the display and see if they can find items that might just be typical bedroom items, or might be tools to hide substances.

MADE Coalition Coordinator Catherine Barden said after parents go through the display, someone will review what they found and point out items they might have missed. Barden said this event is a good way to keep parents informed.

“This is mostly coming from the fact that we want to continue to keep parents educated, especially in a world that is changing so fast,” she said. “Whether it comes down to drug trends or even trends with being online and different social media apps and stuff like that, everything changes so fast, so it is just important to keep parents educated and have a place to go if they want more information on stuff like this.”

This is the first year this display is being used in Madison, but Barden said similar events have been held in other states and MADE is excited to bring this to town.

The display is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is followed by a roundtable discussion that evening. Roundtable participants include MADE representatives and representatives from Madison Youth & Family Services, Madison Public Schools, and the Madison Police Department.

“It is going to be a discussion on what we see as trends and what we are doing as a community to address that and what our next steps are,” Barden said.

The event is free and open to the public. The interactive display is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 at the Madison Town Campus, 8 Campus Drive. The roundtable discussion is that evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Town Campus. For more information, contact Catherine Barden at 203-245-5645.
