Once it was the Shoreline Medical Center. Now it is an unoccupied and gated building on Westbrook Road (Route 153) in Essex. The Shoreline Medical Center moved to Flat Rock Place in Westbrook more than a year ago, and at the most recent meeting of the Essex Board of Selectmen, a spokesman for Middlesex Hospital has revealed plans for the now-unused site.

According to David Giuffrida, vice president for operations at Middlesex Hospital, the former medical center will now house physical and occupational therapy offices. Currently those offices are located at 192 Westbrook Road in Essex.

Giuffrida said that the existing footprint of the building would be maintained, with extensive remodeling of the interior and re-landscaping of the exterior. The present helicopter pad and the MRI equipment will remain.

Giuffrida showed two different drawings of plans, one of which included doctor’s offices as well as space for physical and occupational therapy.

“We want to maximize and make the best use of the space,” he said.

The new exterior plans will include removing many of the current shrubs and replanting with a landscape design similar to the new medical center in Westbrook. The building will also be repainted and get a new roof.

Giuffrida explained that the facility is currently gated because some property, including exterior paving stones, has been stolen.

At the moment, the hospital’s plans call for the design work to be completed by October of this year and the renovation work to be finished by June 2018.
