Spectrum Gallery Searching for Artists for Summer Arts Festival

After last year’s inaugural show on the Essex Town Green, Spectrum Gallery is looking for artists and artisans to participate in its 2017 festival. The gallery is looking for works by representational and abstract painters, sculptors, illustrators, photographers, original printmakers, fabric artists, glass and wood artisans, jewelry designers, and crafters. Visual artists working in a variety of mediums are welcome to submit an application to the festival.

“Last year was our first time on the Green, so we used the space conservatively, with only 40 artists showing,” said Gallery Director Barbara Nair. “This year we will have up to 50 participants, but no more than that because it is a small space.”

Another change this year is that at both the summer and autumn festival, only two artists will be allowed per booth. In the past, a maximum of three had been allowed.

“We’re trying to emphasize to artists that they have to register early,” said Nair. “As of now we have 20 spots taken out of the 50 available.”

The festival show opens two weeks before the festival itself, and features works by artists and artisans exhibiting.

“The deadlines are important, and there are lots of them,” continued Nair. “Because it is a local festival and involves a lot of local artists, people sometimes don’t pay attention to them. If they apply late and if we already filled a lot of spots with that kind of medium, even if they are very good, we won’t be able to accommodate them.”

Nair stressed that they are looking for variety as well as early submissions.

“Quality of work is important, too,” she said, “but most people who will submit know the quality we are looking for.”

The full call and prospectus can be found on the gallery’s website www.spectrumartgallery.org. The juried show at Spectrum Gallery runs from May 19 through July 2, with the festival occurring on June 17 and 18. Those participating in the festival must attend both days. A free, open-to-the public reception for the show will be held on May 19; appetizers and wine will be served, and attendees have the chance to meet with the artists.

“It’s a great weekend,” said Nair. “It’s Father’s Day, the weather is usually good, it’s a great venue, and people are usually out walking around, looking for gifts, and just enjoying everything.”

The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 5. For more information, email Barbara@spectrumartgallery.org.
