LWVES Launches Student Video Contest 'Vote: It Matters'

League of Women Voters of the East Shore (LWVES) announce the second annual Student Video contest to create a public service announcment on the importance of voting. The contest's 2016 inauguration was won by a team of Madison high school students, shown here being congratulated by LWVES president Carol Reimers (l-r): Andrew Esposito, Luke Fumiatti, Zach Morro and Ryan Tomicic.Photo Courtesy LWVES

In the span of 30 seconds, a Patriot dies in his son's arms during the Battle of Long Island (1777); then the scene flashes to a modern-day teen telling his friend, "I'm not going to vote, it's just a waste of time," followed by the message, "Your Ancestors Died for Your Right to Vote. Use it Wisely."

The video, produced by four Madison high school students, won last year's inaugural Student Video Contest of the League of Women Voters of the East Shore (LWVES). Now, LWVES, which serves Branford, North Branford, Guilford and Madison, is excited to announce the launch of the 2017 Student Video Contest, "Vote! It Matters."

LWVES wants the winning video to encourage voters of all ages to participate in local elections, said LWVES president Carol Reimers.

"Unfortunately, voter turnout for local elections is lower than for national elections.  The League would like to begin to change this trend with creative student produced videos that will encourage citizens to make a difference in their communities by voting," said  Reimers.

The student video contest is a part of LWVES "Local Government Initiative."

This year's contest requires students produce a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video "...intended to get the message out about the importance of voting in local elections that directly impact our communities," according to a press release from LWVES.

The contest is open to high school students (individuals or groups) in grades 9 - 12 from the towns of Branford, North Branford, Guilford and Madison. The deadline for submission is before midnight on May 1, 2017. Winners will be announced May 15.

LWVES gives a prize of $150 to the winning PSA, as well as awarding second place $100 and $50 as third prize.
