02/07/2017 12:30 PMThe newly elected state representative for Connecticut’s 36th District, Bob Siegrist (R), wants to know how you feel about taxes. He’s also interested in your opinion on a ban on plastic bags, the state budget crisis, recreational marijuana, and a host of other issues relevant to Connecticut.
“I’m here for the people of the district and I want to hear what they say,” said Siegrist.
Last month, Siegrist started an online survey to gauge his constituents’ sentiment on numerous topics. Residents can access it throughout the current legislative session, which runs until June 7.
“I know I’m the new kid on the block,” said Siegrist. “On my campaign I vowed I would listen to everybody—whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat—and I think the survey is a good start to that promise.”
During his campaign, Siegrist also promised to get the state budget under control. Several questions on the survey address the issue.
“If you had to make cuts to restore our fiscal health, what would you cut?” he asks.
As of last week, more than 130 residents had taken the survey. Siegrist is still going over the responses—and of course, he’s hoping to receive many more.
“It’s still early,” he commented. “We’ll keep it going through the session.”
So far, two commonalities have stood out.
“People are pretty happy we’re having a survey,” he noted, judging from comments he’d received.
Additionally, the response to “Do you think Connecticut should raise taxes?” has been consistent.
“Overwhelmingly, people say ‘No,’” Siegrist said.
In the same vein of listening to his constituents, Siegrist is planning on holding a town hall meeting in early March.
“It’s about listening to the people of my district,” he said. “I want to represent them with a clear mind and I want to hear what they have to say.”
