An elderly woman struck by a car in the Stop & Shop parking lot this afternoon has been transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the Madison Police Department. Police have the roadway in front of the grocery store roped off to further traffic, though customers can still enter and exit.

Police report that at approximately 2:45 p.m. today, the Madison Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call about the accident. The driver of the motor vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

"She is around 85 years old and I know there are broken bones and possibly head trauma," said Captain Joseph Race of the victim.

Race said police are still compiling details on the accident.

"The traffic team is just getting out there and talking to the driver," he said. "I know it [the accident] was right up against the building close to where the bottle exchange area is."

The accident is being investigated by the South Central Regional Traffic Unit and members of the Madison Police Department. Anyone with information regarding this accident is asked to contact the Madison Police Department at 203-245-2721.
