Souper Bowl Event Returns to Madison Jan. 28

After a successful inaugural year, the Souper Bowl is returning to downtown on Saturday, Jan. 28. The event, which will run from noon to 3 p.m., will include soups, chilis, and stews from multiple local restaurants and attendees will have a chance to taste and vote for their favorite.

Put on by The Madison Chamber of Commerce, the event drew 400 people downtown last year. The event takes place the week before the Super Bowl—hence the name—and Chamber Executive Director Eileen Banisch said the Chamber hopes to bring just as many people into town this year despite the winter weather.

“We acknowledged that Madison is often thought of as a beach town, but wanted to be sure there were interesting things to do/events to attend all year long,” she said.

More than 10 restaurants and civic groups, including both fire departments, Donahue’s, the Madison Beach Hotel, Friends & Company, Café Allegre, The Hearth at Tuxis Pond, Madison House, Schoolhouse Deli, Moxie, and The Shoreline Vine participated in the event last year and Banisch said she hopes to see them all back plus a few more.

Last year the event raised close to $3,000 for Joe Barber, a local teen who was seriously injured in a diving accident. This year, proceeds from the event will benefit Outrun 38, a Branford-based organization that promotes fitness and healthy living through community initiatives to raise awareness about and provide support to those living with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system.

“Outrun 38 is a group that started locally and has expanded quite a bit,” Banisch said. “Liz Shuman of Madison, who has cystic fibrosis, was the inspiration for this non-profit, in her fight to ‘outrun’ the life expectancy of 38 years.”

Admission for the event is $10. The inclement weather date for the event is Sunday, Jan. 29. For more information on the event or to pre-purchase a wristband, visit madisonct.com.
