Public Invited to North Haven Fire Stations Open House Event

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the public is invited to visit any of North Haven’s four fire stations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the stations will have tours, the opportunity to meet firefighters, fire engine and equipment displays, and fire safety information.

The locations of the stations and the activities at each are as follows:

• Company 1 Fire Headquarters—11 Broadway: Building plaque unveiling at 11 a.m.

• Company 2 Montowese—282 Quinnipiac Avenue: Home fire escape plans and an outside meeting place for single and multi-family homes

• Company 3 West Ridge—1331 Ridge Road: Types of smoke detectors, photo electric vs. ionization and why you need both; training room dedication at noon

• Company 4 Northeast—366 Washington Avenue: What is Carbon Monoxide?

The Fire Department Open House is a culminating event for national Fire Prevention Week, which runs Sunday, Oct. 9 to Saturday, Oct. 15.

During this week, the North Haven Fire Department is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to remind residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Location matters when it comes to your smoke alarm. That’s the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t wait, check the date, replace smoke alarms every 10 years!”

The North Haven Fire Department Open House provides residents with an educational, family-oriented opportunity to learn more about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every bedroom.

“In a fire, seconds count and smoke can quickly incapacitate anybody,” said Fire Chief Paul Januszewski. “Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms which weren’t functioning due to age or battery.”

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign includes the following smoke alarm messages:

• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

• Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do.

• Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.

• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner

• Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

• If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place.

• Call the fire department from outside the home.
