Two Gentlemen—and a Large Entourage—Coming to the Green

The Shoreline Arts Alliance continues its free outdoor performances of classic theater on the historic Guilford Green with The Two Gentlemen of Verona, which runs on the Green from Wednesday, Aug. 3 to Sunday, Aug. 7. Shakespeare on the Shoreline 2016 is the group’s 15th annual production, bringing five nights of family-friendly entertainment to residents and visitors.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. nightly, though many guests arrive well in advance to stake out prime seating and enjoy a picnic. In addition to picnics, guests should bring chairs and blankets and come ready to enjoy free theater under the stars.

Inaugurated in 2002, the Shoreline Arts Alliance has presented Macbeth, The Tempest, Richard III, and Romeo & Juliet performed by the Elm Shakespeare Company of New Haven, Connecticut Free Shakespeare performing Edmond Rostand’s classic, Cyrano de Bergerac, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, and Three Musketeers. In 2012, the alliance partnered with Shakesperience Productions, Inc., of Waterbury, whose performances have included The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged, Much Ado About Nothing, King Lear, and The Comedy of Errors.

As part of the Shoreline Arts Alliance’s mission to promote arts, the performances feature pre- and post-show talk backs every night. Pre-show talks begin at 6:30 p.m. under the tent and post-shows at the stage immediately following final curtain. American Sign Language interpreters will be present for the Aug. 3 and Aug. 7 main stage performances and pre- and post-show talk backs. Large print and Braille programs as well as assisted listening devices are available at all performances.

Along with the Shakespeare production, the company will stage daytime children and family performance of Gulliver’s Travels. Performances take place Thursday, Aug. 4 at 9:30 a.m. at Jacobs Beach in Guilford, Friday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at James Blackstone Memorial Library in Branford, and Saturday, Aug. 6 at 10 a.m. at Guilford Parks and Recreation (an autism/sensory friendly performance). The performances are free and all are welcome.
